Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme

UPDATE: As of 01 May 2007, the Science and Engineering Graduates Scheme (SEGS) will be superseded by the International Graduates Scheme (IGS). Students who receive a bachelors degree or better in any discipline from a recognized institution in the UK will be allowed to stay in the country for 12 months to look for work. To come under the new scheme, they must receive their results on or after 01 May 2007. Please see our news article on the new International Graduates Scheme. SEGS will still apply to those who graduate before 01 May 2007.

The Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme was launched on Monday 25 October 2004. The scheme was first announced in Summer 2004.

This immigration category allows non-EEA nationals who have graduated from UK higher or further education establishments in certain mathematics, physical sciences and engineering subjects with a 2.2 degree or higher to remain in the UK for 12 months after their studies in order to pursue a career.

An amendment to the program allows all Master's and PhD students to be eligible for SEGS with any course from a recognized UK higher education institution if they commenced their study on or after 01 May 2006.

Indefinite leave to remain

If later on you obtain a work permit or can come under HSMP, after 5 years you can apply for 'Indefinite Leave To Remain' in the UK which means you can live and work in the UK without any further restrictions (NOTE: changed from 4 to 5 years during the spring of 2006). We can also help you with this. Please refer to the permanent residence/indefinite leave to remain section of this website.
